Windows phone first came into the picture in October 2010 after its launch by Microsoft Corporation. Windows phones did not fail because of a single reason but rather due to multiple flaws. One of the main reasons why Windows OS failed is not using the launch of the iOS operating system as an eye-opener. If Windows took on the challenge posed by iOS, it might still be available today. After the first iPhone was introduced, the iOS operating system became one of the bestselling systems. In fact, according to statistics, in 2015, which was the time Windows phone was winding up, Apple made record-breaking sales of 231 million units.

Another big mistake Windows phone made is underestimating Android. By the time Google was being created, Microsoft was a big company, and so the Windows team underestimated the impact Google was making with services such as Gmail. The Windows team did not comprehend that Google was making more versatile products that could accommodate different markets.

After years of struggle, Google hammered the last nail on the coffin by halting the creation of Windows-based apps. As a result, Windows phone users would no longer access Google apps on Windows devices. The step saw Windows lose its clients to Android and Apple. After a series of events and attempts to revive the operating system, the parent company deemed it fit to retire the Windows phone. According to the timeline, the Windows OS spanned for a short period and was quickly benched by iOS and Android operating systems.
