Video codec H.264/AVC added to real-time communications stack in Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Edge to support plugin-free video calling
Microsoft has included preliminary support for H.264/AVC in the real-time communications (RTC) stack in Microsoft Edge. The feature enters the preview stage for Windows Insiders running PC Build 14352.
Those who wish can now navigate to about:flags and check ‘Enable experimental H.264/AVC support’.
Full H.264/AVC support would eventually allow users to make video calls from Microsoft Edge without plugins.
The support for H.264/AVC currently includes:
- Support for packetization-mode 1, per RFC 7742
- Support for Constrained Baseline Profile with levels up to 4.2 (i.e. with profile-level-id=42c02a)
- Support for the absolute send time header extension (abs-send-time)
-
Support for Picture Loss Indication (PLI), per RFC 4585
