Some of the old Lumia phones to get firmware updates before Windows 10 Mobile
Future Windows 10 Mobile updates will not be bundled with firmware
While Microsoft still hasn’t announced when the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile for the old Lumia phones will happen, Neowin reports that some of these phones may receive a firmware update before or at the same time as the Windows 10 update.
Microsoft has apparently separated the firmware updates from Windows 10 Mobile, and any future OS updates after the upgrade to Windows 10 won’t be bundled with such a firmware. This has an important benefit for all users – Microsoft can bypass the carriers and deliver OS updates over-the-air to all devices at the same time.
Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 were bundled with firmware named Black, Cyan, and Denim, while Windows 10 Mobile won’t necessarily include such a firmware update. Whether a firmware rolls out to a specific phone will depend on the manufacturer who can decide to fine tune the software to fix some issues, or provide additional functionality.
It is important to know that while the OS updates in a form of new builds (Windows as a service) won’t require a carrier approval, the firmware updates will still require such an approval.
