Reset protection feature debuts on Lumia 640/ Lumia 640 XL
Anti-theft protection comes to Windows 10
Microsoft Lumia 640 and 640 XL both ship with Update 2 (GDR2) on-board and we can spot a number of enhancements in the latest iteration of Windows Phone 8.1.
Among the changes are: better organized Settings for easier navigation; an ability to edit the phone name; App permissions, and reset protection.
Reset protection is probably the most important new feature in Update 2. Reset Protection can be activated on a new device while setting it up for the first time, or through the Microsoft account page by going to -> Settings à Find my phone.
After enabling the feature, the smartphone will be protected against hard resetting or re-flashing, which will make the device almost unusable by thieves and can ultimately lead to a lower level of stolen Windows Phones.
The reset protection status of any phone can be checked here after entering the IMEI or MEID number.
In case you’ve sold a protected device, you can generate a special code (through your Microsoft account page) and send it to the new owner for unlocking.
Anti-reset feature is currently available only for smartphones which are running Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 – Lumia 640 and 640 XL. The newly announced Lumia 540 will also ship with Update 2 pre-loaded, while just a few of the old devices will be upgraded to 8.1.2.
Windows 10 Mobile will protect all smartphones against thieves once it rolls out to the current Lumia devices in the second half of the year.
