Windows 10 Mobile version 1511 is now out of support

The original version of Windows 10 Mobile that debuted with the Lumia 950 and 950 XL in November 2015 will no longer receive cumulative updates with security fixes. Microsoft has released several major OS updates since 2015, but if you still are among those 4.6% of the users on version 1511, you should know that this version is now officially dead, and you’d better upgrade to a newer version to remain supported.

Microsoft supports each version of Windows 10 Mobile for about two years after release, and from the Microsoft’s Support Page we learn that the latest version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) will be supported until December 2019, 1703 (Creators Update) until June 2019, while version 1607 (Anniversary Update) will be actively supported until October 2018.

The company is not planning new features for Windows 10 Mobile, neither future major OS updates, so December 2019 is in fact the ‘End of Life’ for the current smartphones. But Microsoft is not giving up on Windows on Mobile anytime soon. A unified Windows 10 platform codenamed ‘Andromeda’ is expected to debut this year, running on both PC and Mobile devices with ARM processors, so we could finally see the mythical Surface Phone.
