Can you still use a Windows phone in 2021?
Microsoft killed its mobile platform years ago, and the number of available apps is steadily decreasing in the store. However, you can still use many of the popular applications through the browser. For example, Instagram has been retired, but the PWA app works somehow on Edge. You have to bookmark the website and pin it on the home screen for a quick access. Of course, you can’t expect the same experience as if using Android or the latest iPhone.
Other apps, such as Facebook, have long had alternative versions on Windows mobile. These are not official products, but worked in a similar way. Now we understand that Facebook is forcing these developers to remove their products from Android store, but Windows 10 Mobile may be way too small to bother lawyers.
While Windows phones are history, Microsoft now has 1.3 billion Windows 10 users, with earnings coming above estimates. It’s a shame that Microsoft abandoned its mobile platform, but this might have been the right choice for the company. Windows phones have always been niche products, even at their peak when the market share was close to 10% in Europe. Yes, you can still use a Windows phone in 2021, but it will be a painful experience.
