Windows 10 Build 14291 includes improved Maps app and Edge extensions

Microsoft has published a new Redstone build for Windows Insiders on the Fast Ring. Build 14291 introduces many new features and improvements for smartphones and PCs.

Windows 10 Mobile 14291 is only available for some devices that shipped with Windows 10 Mobile – Microsoft Lumia 550, 650, 950, 950 XL, Xiaomi Mi4, and Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL.

The company will add more phones to the list with devices that can receive Redstone builds in the coming weeks.

All phones that receive an official Windows 10 update will be able to join the Windows Insider program very soon. The list with supported models currently includes: BLU Win HD, BLU Win HD LTE, Lumia 430, 435, 535, 535, 540, 550, 635 (1GB), 640, 640XL, 650, 730, 735, 830, 930, 950, 950XL, 1520, Xiaomi Mi 4 and MCJ Madosma Q501. Microsoft mentions that more phones may join the Insider list in the future.

What’s new for Mobile

Windows Maps Redstone New app

Windows 10 14291 brings a new Maps app for Mobile and PC. The updated Maps app includes one-tap access to search; the ability to view multiple searches and directions at the same time. Users can minimize results, directions and locations, see labels for search results directly on the map. Microsoft has also improved the search logic and the turn-by-turn design for greater glanceability in landscape mode. Users can also access favorites offline and add notes.

Alarms & Clock has been updated with a new time picker and improved design for creating and editing alarms and timers.

Alarms and Feedback Hub

The Feedback Hub is available for both PC and mobile. The app combines the old Windows Feedback and Insider Hub apps.

Windows 10 Insider Preview 14291 (only for PC) introduces extensions for Microsoft Edge and pinned Tabs in the browser.

Along with all new features, Windows 10 Mobile 14291 fixed some bugs and issues found in earlier builds.

Here are the fixes:

  • Word Flow recognition works better for longer words

  • Fixes for WiFi connectivity using WEP encryption.

  • Fixes for text input speed

  • All apps list font size doesn’t change if you ‘Make text larger’ in Settings → Ease of access

  • Fixes in Photos app: an issue where touch targets could be out of alignment in the picker

Known issues for Mobile:

  • Hard-reset after build 14291 and creating a back-up are not recommended. There is an issue with the backup restoring – the app list consists of blank grey squares and the apps fail to install. If you create a new backup of build 14291 it will be corrupted. That’s why you should turn-off backups in Settings → Update & Security → Backup

  • Microsoft Band 1 & 2 won’t sync due to a system API failure. A temporary fix is to change the language of the phone

  • The Gadgets app won’t detect the Microsoft Display Dock and the dock cannot be updated to the latest firmware – version 4.

  • The new option in Settings named ‘Update & Security for Windows Insider Program’ is not working at the moment.
