Windows Phone 8.1 will be officially dead in July 2017
Microsoft to end support for Windows Phone 8.1 in July
Microsoft will be ending mainstream support for Windows Phone 8.1 devices on July 11, 2017, according to a Microsoft Support page. The company officially allowed around half of the legacy Windows Phones to install Windows 10 Mobile in 2016, although Microsoft didn’t automatically rolled out the update to them, but required installation of an app called ‘Upgrade Advisor’.
Microsoft now informs on its support page for Windows Phone 8.1 that all devices on the OS cannot expect any future or security updates after July 2017. However, this is not big news considering the fact that Microsoft actually stopped releasing updates more than a year ago, while many apps and services were discontinued in the past few months.
If you are still on a Windows Phone 8.1 device like the Lumia 520, 1020 or 920, the end date for supporting the OS won’t affect you in any way besides the limited number of apps in the Store.
