Sources close to Microsoft shed more light on the first Windows Phone 8.1 update expected in 2014. Neowin confirms that the update is now being tested on real devices and should be ready for release later this year. According to leaked information, Update 1 or GDR1, as the first update has been called internally, could be given another name before the official release. One is sure, Microsoft is in the final stage of development and GDR1 will roll out to all devices soon (2-4 months) after the WP8.1 launch in July.

GDR1 update for Windows Phone 8.1 should bring relatively minor improvements to the platform though there could be a few surprises like 3D interaction support which is expected to be ready in time for the very high-end smartphone codenamed Nokia McLaren.

The name ‘GDR’ or General Distribution Release was used by Microsoft for its first two updates to Windows Phone 8 while the third update was called differently – ‘Update 3’. It seems that Redmond is working hard to further improve its mobile platform and the work for these future updates has already begun.
