Windows Phone 8.1 is already installed on 1.5 million devices
Windows Phone 8.1 is already installed on 3.1% of all active smartphones, according to AdDuplex. A new report shows that millions of users have joined the ‘Preview for Developers’ program, which gives an early access to updates directly from Microsoft. 3.1% equals to 1.5 millions smartphones, from the total of 50 million smartphones in the world. The numbers are pretty impressive, considering the fact that the 8.1 update is scheduled to begin rolling out in a few months, while the first 8.1 smartphones (Lumia 630 & Lumia 930) will reach the market in May /June.
AddDuplex shows that Windows Phone 8.0 smartphones accounts for 78% of all models, while 7.X models are declining to 18.9%. We expect to see these 7.X models slowly disappear from the graph, as most of the two-year contracts to which they are bound end this year.
Nokia is King
Nokia (soon Microsoft Mobile) is still the market leader with a 93.5% share of all devices, followed by Samsung with just 1.3%. With many new manufacturers having expressed interest to build WP8.1 based models, the overall picture can change later this year.
Nokia Lumia 520 is still the most popular smartphone with a marketshare of 34.4%, Lumia 920 is second with 6.4%, followed by Lumia 625 with 6.3%.
Other interesting numbers:
- AT&T has a 34% market share of Windows Phone devices in the US
- Nokia Lumia 920 is the most popular model in China
- Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520 do well in China with 3.8% and 4.1% respectively
