Windows Phone 8.1.2 will be the last update before Windows 10

Microsoft is expected to finish the distribution of Lumia Denim with Windows Phone 8.1.1 to all unlocked devices before the end of February but smartphones enrolled to the Preview For Developers Program may soon receive Update 2 which has been reportedly completed and is now ready to be rolled out.

Update 2 (GDR2) for Windows Phone 8.1 will eventually arrive to all smartphones and we believe this will be the last major update before Windows 10 in late summer / early fall. There are indications that Microsoft may announce two new mid-range models at the Mobile World Congress and these devices may arrive with Update 2 pre-installed.

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 won’t bring drastic changes and many new features to the OS, as Microsoft has probably decided to release a watered-down version of GDR2 while most of the new features will come along with Windows 10 in summer.

Known changes with Update 2, according to NPU

  • Video Over LTE support
  • Route an SMS message to a partner application
  • More Phone languages: Bangla (Bangladesh), Khmer, Kiswahili, Lao
