Juha Alakarhu from Microsoft shed more light on the upcoming camera improvements expected with Lumia Denim software update later in 2014. Even though all Lumia smartphones will be getting the update, only the last generation of PureView devices will benefit from speed improvement, Auto HDR, Rich capture, 4k video, and some other enhancements.

PureView devices powered by old S4-gen Snapdragon processors include the Lumia 920, Lumia 925, and the Nokia Lumia 1020. This is bad news especially for all 1020 owners who hoped to take advantage of the Lumia Denim firmware. With Microsoft’s main rivals narrowing the gap to Lumia’s camera capabilities, Microsoft badly needs to launch a 1020 successor as soon as possible. Indeed, rumor has it that Microsoft could be working on a Lumia 1030 at this particular moment.

Lumia Denim comes pre-loaded on the Lumia 830 and will roll out to all existing WP8.1 devices later this year, though only the Nokia Lumia 930, Icon, and 1520’s users will take advantage of camera speed and other PureView enhancements.
