The media event in China will be focused on Surface

Microsoft is holding a media event in Shanghai, China, on May 23. The company has a landing page for the event that states: “On May 23 in Shanghai, Microsoft will show the world what’s next.”

No clues have been given regarding what to expect on May 23, but Panos Panay will be one of the speakers and he will share both global and regions news. He also posted on Twitter the hashtag #Surface which is a clear sign that we will see new products under the Surface brand. The company announced the Surface Laptop this week during the #MicrosoftEDU event in New York.

There are rumors about more new products planned for 2017 – a successor to the Surface Pro 4 tablet, a Cortana-powered device, and even about the mythical portable Surface device that will “create a new category”.

We are sceptical about seeing something that resembles a mobile device so early in 2017. Microsoft made clear that the company is out of the smartphone market and predicts insignificant revenue from phones in the following quarters. Alex Kipman, who is the lead of the HoloLens team, recently said that “the phone is already dead, but the people have not realised.
