Lumia 950’s camera beats Android and iOS flagships

PureView is a symbol of high quality smartphone cameras. From the incredible Nokia 808 PureView from early 2012, the first Windows Phone 8 flagship Lumia 920, to the unique Lumia 1020 and the more conventional Lumia 930 – all these phones were leaders for their times in terms of camera capabilities.

In November this year, Microsoft announced two flagship phones, Lumia 950 and 950 XL, which have identical cameras – 20MP PureView with Zeiss optics, three LED flash lights, 5^th generation OIS and features like double exposure and dynamic flash.

We’ve been pretty sure that the new Lumias will have very capable cameras. Microsoft even posted some samples from the Lumia 950s, which looked amazing, but we needed more proofs. Thanks to websites specialized in camera comparisons, we can see how these new PureView devices stand up against the best cameraphones available in the market right now – among them LG G4, Samsung Galaxy S6 and Sony Xperia Z5.

First is the special photo compare tool by GSMarena which lets you compare the cameras of up to three phones over different setups in a controlled environment.

Here are the crops from the iPhone 6s Plus, the Xperia Z5 Premium and the Lumia 950 (keep in mind that the 950 XL has the same camera):

You can see that the Lumia 950 is a clear winner in terms of photo quality. The photos from the 20MP sensor have more details, better colors, and less noise.

Another test, this time by All About Windows Phone, compares the new Microsoft flagships against the current leader from the ‘other world’ – LG G4. Steve Litchfield has tested both phones in 9 scenes and his conclusion is that “Microsoft (and the ex-Nokia engineers) have crafted a smartphone camera that’s evidently a successor to those in the Lumia 1020 and 930, and a competitor to the industry-leading LG G4”.
