What we know so far about Update 1 for Windows Phone 8.1
While most of the users are waiting to get their phones updated to the newest OS version, Microsoft is readying Update 1 for Windows Phone 8.1. According to NPU, GDR1 for Windows Phone 8.1 which is now being tested by OEMs should be enabled for participants in the Developers Preview program sometime in late August / September. Here are some of the changes and new features that Update 1 will bring according to internal sources familiar with the matter:
- New Live Tile for the Store with logo and name
- Phone Cover apps support: Windows Phone could display the app cover layout above the Lock Screen when a phone cover is used
- Entity extraction in the Messaging app
- Start Screen folders
- New hardware requirements: proximity and accelerometer sensors are now required
- Support for 1280 x 800 screens
- NTP protocols support
- New Phone book entries from a car using voice thanks to deeper Cortana integration
- Dual-SIM with two GSM + CDMA networks
- The Start layout could be modified by manufacturers
