Formula 1 kills its Windows 10 app ahead of the 2018 season
Official Formula 1 app for Windows 10 has been retired
Less than two years after Formula 1 released an official UWP app in the Microsoft Store, the company is retiring the app through which you could read news and videos, access Live Timing, and more. The 2018 season, starting this month in Australia, won’t be covered by the app, as a pop up message informs us that the “F1 App for Windows 10 is not longer available” and we should head to Formula1.com for Live Timing and latest news.
Although the premium features work pretty well on the mobile web browser, the app had some extra features. Discontinuing the Windows 10 app tell us once again that not having a viable mobile platform hurts Microsoft’s ambitions with UWP. While there are more than 700 million active Windows 10 PCs, the majority of the F1 UWP users were using Windows Phone or Windows 10 Mobile. With the demise of the mobile platforms, very few companies see the future in their UWP apps.
At the same time, F1 for Android and iOS is fully supported, working and ready for the 2018 season. In addition to the F1 apps, the company owner of Formula 1 is preparing a subscription-based digital TV service in 40 markets, accessible via web and mobile apps.
